Many of us have had to re-route our vacation plans this summer to a more local destination. And we’re honestly here for it! Our own Alberta backyard is one of the most beautiful, internationally recognized places, and we think now is the time to truly explore it.
Obviously, one of Alberta’s most iconic features are the awe-inspiring Rocky Mountains. From towering peaks, roaring waterfalls, whimsical wildlife to emerald coloured lakes, there’s truly something for everyone in our mountain areas.
We recently caught up with our friends over at Lexus of Edmonton, who happen to LOVE dabbling in the outdoors. Together, we came up with our top 5 mountain road trip destinations, all located right here in Alberta!
1. Abraham Lake
If you’re looking to do some crown land camping, or day trip it out to a beautiful place, we suggest Abraham Lake! Located along the gorgeous David Thompson Highway, past Nordegg, Abraham Lake sports all the features you want in a mountain adventure. From gorgeous emerald painted water, to jutting mountain-scapes on the horizon, there are endless views and areas to experience.

2. Moraine Lake
Banff National Park’s world renowned Moraine Lake is hard to even describe in words. It’s magic must be experienced in person, then you’ll know what we mean. If you want to feel like you’re in a real-life painting, we highly recommend visiting this beautiful Rocky Mountain icon. Be sure to set your alarm clocks early! Their super small parking lot fills up quickly, and they do start to turn away guests when the area becomes too crowded. Experiencing Moraine Lake at sunrise is SO worth it, though.

3. Athabasca Falls
Located in Jasper National Park, Athabasca Falls is an absolute must-see in the summer months. Take in the magnificent Mount Kerkeslin, serving as a picturesque backdrop for the falls, and explore the deep winding pathways that take you down to the roaring Athabasca River.

4. Spray Lakes Reservoir

5. Bow Glacier Falls Trail
If you have never made your way onto the Icefields Parkway, then you need to add that to your summer list this year! This gorgeous stretch of road offers stunning back country views and connects Banff National Park to Jasper National Park! Located on the Parkway, you will find the breathtaking Bow Lake. Known for it’s jaw-dropping sunrises, Bow Lake hosts a variety of lookout points and the incredible Bow Glacier Falls Trail! Rated as Moderate on AllTrails , this hike is great for beginners looking to increase their hiking skills, while still following a heavily trafficked, out and back trail. Give yourself time to do this one, as it will take about 3 hours to get there and back. But let us be the first to say this it’s SO WORTH IT. Once you round the last bend and can actually see Bow Glacier Falls roaring in the distance, the last kilometer or so becomes easy! You can go right up to the falls and truly experience its power!
